Accessing Douglas County Jail Records

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office jail page is at co.douglas.mn.us/176/Jail. The main phone for the Sheriff and jail is 320-762-2139. The office is located at 509 3rd Avenue W, Alexandria, MN 56308. For the most current custody information, calling the jail directly is often the most reliable method.

Like many smaller Minnesota counties, Douglas County may not always have a live online inmate roster. County websites can experience technical issues or may update rosters on a schedule rather than in real time. If the online resource is unavailable, the phone and mail process still applies. Under Minn. Stat. § 13.82, public booking data must be released on request. Call or mail a request to the jail address for any records not available online.

Written requests should go to 509 3rd Avenue W, Alexandria, MN 56308. Include the subject's name, date of birth if known, and the approximate date of arrest. The more detail you provide, the faster the response will be. Staff will confirm whether the person is in custody or can provide past booking records if they are on file.

For cases that moved from the Douglas County jail to a state prison, the DOC locator is the right tool. County jail rosters only reflect people in local custody.

What Minnesota Law Requires Agencies to Release

Every Minnesota county must follow the same rules for releasing booking data. Minn. Stat. § 13.82 classifies arrest and booking records as public data. That means the Douglas County Sheriff cannot refuse a request for this information without citing a specific legal exception.

The public fields include the person's name, charges, date and time of booking, date and time of arrest, and the unit that made the arrest. Release information is also public once it happens. There is no requirement to explain why you want the records. Any person can request them.

Data that is not public includes medical information, mental health records, and juvenile records. Those are protected by other sections of the Minnesota Statutes. If the agency withholds data, it must tell you which specific law applies. A general refusal without citing a statute is not compliant with the Data Practices Act.

If you believe a records request was wrongly denied, you can contact the Minnesota Department of Administration's Data Practices Office. That office handles complaints and can issue advisory opinions on whether a refusal was proper.

Note: If the Douglas County Sheriff's website is unavailable, the same public records can be requested directly by phone at 320-762-2139 or by mail to the Alexandria address.

Douglas County Court Records

Douglas County is part of the Seventh Judicial District. Criminal cases from Douglas County arrests are heard in the district court in Alexandria. Court records are searchable for free at Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO).

MCRO allows you to search by name or by case number. If you have a booking number from the jail roster, you can use the associated case number (if it appears on the record) to pull the court file directly. MCRO shows hearing dates, filings, and case status in real time.

Certified copies of court documents require a request to the Douglas County Court Administrator. The court administrator is separate from the Sheriff's Office. Fees apply. Processing times depend on the workload at the time of the request. For basic case status, MCRO is the faster option.
