St. Louis County Jail Roster

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office publishes an online jail roster at stlouiscountymn.gov. The roster refreshes every hour. That means if someone was booked an hour ago, they should appear. It's one of the more frequent update schedules among Minnesota county jails, which helps when you're trying to confirm a recent arrest.

The roster covers the main Duluth facility at 100 North 5th Ave. West. St. Louis County also operates two 72-hour lockup facilities on the Iron Range: one in Hibbing with space for 8 inmates and one in Virginia that holds up to 12. People held at the range lockups may not appear immediately in the online roster, so if you're searching for someone arrested in Hibbing or Virginia, calling the jail directly is the faster option.

A 48-hour release roster is also available. This shows people who were recently released, which is useful for tracking when someone left custody. Not every county in Minnesota offers a release list, so this is a helpful extra resource for St. Louis County.

St. Louis County jail roster for booking reports
The St. Louis County jail roster at stlouiscountymn.gov updates hourly and includes a 48-hour release list.

Searches on the roster typically use a name or booking number. Results include current custody status, charges, and facility location. The hourly refresh means the data stays fairly current, but for time-sensitive matters, a call to the jail at (218) 726-2345 is the most reliable way to confirm someone's status.

Note: St. Louis County's two Iron Range lockup facilities in Hibbing and Virginia hold inmates for up to 72 hours before transfer or release, and records for those locations may lag the main roster.

What St. Louis County Booking Records Show

Each entry in the jail roster captures a standard set of data fields. The person's full name and date of birth identify who was booked. The booking date tells you when they were processed. Current charges show what they're being held on at the time of the search, though charges can change as the case moves through court.

Custody status shows whether the person is still in custody or was released. If they've been released, the 48-hour release roster may still show them for a short window. Housing facility identifies whether they're at the main Duluth jail or one of the range lockups. Bond information shows whether bail was set, and at what amount. A no-bail hold means they can't be released on money alone.

None of these fields mean someone is guilty. Booking happens at arrest. It reflects the state of a case at one point in time, not its outcome. Charges listed in a booking report may be reduced, dismissed, or changed entirely before any case goes to trial.

Note: Booking charges in the St. Louis County roster reflect the state of a case at the time of arrest and may differ from the charges ultimately filed or resolved in court.

Jail Mail Policy and Visitation

St. Louis County changed its mail policy in March 2025. All inmate mail now routes through a processing address in Phoenix, Maryland before delivery to the Duluth facility. If you're sending mail to someone in the St. Louis County Jail, you need to use the Phoenix address, not the Duluth address. Contact the jail at (218) 726-2345 to get the current mailing address, as routing details for mail processing services can change.

In-person visits at the Duluth jail are available on Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays. Visit scheduling and procedures may vary, so call the jail line before making a trip. The jail can confirm current visiting hours, allowed items, and any ID requirements. Attorneys generally have separate access outside the standard visiting schedule.

Note: As of March 2025, all mail to St. Louis County Jail inmates routes through a Phoenix, Maryland processing address before delivery to Duluth.

Minnesota Law and Booking Data

Minnesota Statutes section 13.82 classifies arrest data as public government data. The St. Louis County Sheriff is required by law to make basic booking information available. This covers names, arrest dates, arresting agencies, charges, and custody status. The public can request physical copies of records under Chapter 13 of the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

Some records are restricted. Juvenile records have limited public access. Ongoing investigations may limit what gets released. Active undercover operations can result in temporary holds on certain data. For everything else, adult arrest and booking data is public by default.

For conviction records beyond what the roster shows, the BCA Criminal History search covers statewide criminal records compiled by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. That's a separate tool from the jail roster and gives a broader picture of a person's record across Minnesota.

Additional Records Resources

Minnesota Court Records Online covers case filings, hearings, and outcomes for cases in the 6th Judicial District, which handles St. Louis County. If you have a case number from a booking record, you can search it directly in the court system to track how the case progressed.

For people sentenced to state prison, the MN DOC Offender Locator covers state correctional facilities. The county jail roster covers county-level custody only, so if someone was transferred to a state facility, the DOC locator is where to look.
